If you are unsure about the web hosting terms used on our website, or just confused about the whole aspect of web hosting, our “Beginners Guide To Web Hosting” will put you on the right track & will provide you with the knowledge required to feel confident when purchasing web hosting. There are many things to learn, so lets get started.

Bandwidth:

Bandwidth is a term used to describe the measurement of traffic on your website. When a visitor lands on your website, loads your pages, uploads or downloads files, bandwidth is used. The more popular your website becomes, the more bandwidth you will require.

Your bandwidth allowance is always delivered on a monthly basis with each web hosting package and resets on the date you opened your account. Our business package offers 40GB on a monthly basis & its very unlikely that you will need more than that.

Diskspace:

Diskspace is the term used to describe the amount of space you have on the server for your files. Every folder and file you upload to your website will take up your available space allocated to your account. This includes every website file including images that you may use throughout your website. Also understand that if you use large images, this will also effect your bandwidth, as this is used to load your website.

General personal or business websites will not require more than 1GB Diskspace, although video/file hosting websites require huge amounts of bandwidth. Its always best to host your videos on Youtube and embed them on your website, this will save your bandwidth and the video will load much faster.

Domains, Nameservers & IP

If you want to access your website from the internet, you will require a domain name (YourDomain.com). This should be something easy to remember or relevant to the industry you are associated with. When you advertise your website, you will be sending all visitors to your domain name, which will direct them to your own personal or business website.

When you have a domain name connected to a hosting account, your domain will load the files uploaded to your server when you visit the domain within your browser, by accessing the server via an IP (internet protocol) address. The IP address is always provided by the hosting company you use.

If you join the 987mb web hosting service and you already have a domain name, all you have to do is change the nameservers on your domain name. A nameserver will set the domain to access the correct IP address for your hosting account. Once you have changed the nameservers, your website files on the server at 987mb will load by accessing your domain online.

MySQL Databases

MySQL is the most popular feature used to run and manage databases on your own server. Database driven websites such as those used by property listings, classified advertising and photo galleries will required the use of a mysql database.

Usernames, passwords and many functions that the websites require will be accessed via the database within a table structure. The website will be coded in a way that allows the website to edit, create and verify entries within the database.

We offer Mysql Databases with every package & also “PHP my admin” that allows you to access and manage your databases which are generally used for our one-click installs for blog, forum & ecommerce software that we provide.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

FTP is used to transfer files from your own computer to your web hosting server. It also allows you to access the server and view, edit or delete files and folders that are visible on the server. Also referred to as an “FTP Client”, you will find it very useful to have, if you plan on uploading & editing files regular. Our favourite FTP Client is named FileZilla and is completely free to download and use.

Please Note: All of the files within the “public_html” folder are used for loading your website. Always make sure you have an “index file” within this folder to ensure your website will load.

Within this post, i shall explain 3 effective marketing methods. Online marketing is vital to ensure the success of your online business. Without online exposure, no one will find your website and purchase your products or services. Online marketing does not have to cost a fortune, as long as you know what free services to use, you will be able to drive targeted traffic to any website you choose. Study the following methods and apply them to your own marketing efforts.

Guest Blogging

There will be many blog owners that can be located via the search engines that are searching for people to write regular blog posts for their existing readers. This gives you a great opportunity to provide valuable information to your exact target market. Whats beneficial about this is that the blog owner will allow you to link back to your website as a thank you for providing the post.

This increases your backlinks and will also send targeted traffic from the blog, to your own website. These kind of backlinks will increase your own search engine rankings within the popular search engines such as Google, Yahoo & Bing. All you need to do is search your target keyword within quotes, including the word “blog” within the search term. For example, if we wanted to find blogs about web hosting, we would enter: “web hosting blog”.

Article Marketing

Article marketing is used by most online marketers to increase targeted website traffic and backlinks to their websites. Do you have in-depth knowledge about your target market? If you do, then article marketing is ideal, free and effective. With article marketing, you cannot write an article about your own specific services, as this will be rejected from the best article directories.

You must always write an article that provides valuable, well thought through information that can either solve a problem or provide knowledge on a specific subject. In the signature of the article, you can include links back to your website which will enable you to divert targeted traffic to your website, as well as build valuable backlinks to your website. Submitting your content to websites such as buzzle, ezine articles, go articles and articles base is very helpful. Be consistent and you shall reap the rewards.

Video Marketing

If you take the time to learn video production, it can be very rewarding. Its fun, its free and it can drive thousands of visitors to your website. You can use your camcorder to record a tutorial, present a report or even use software such as camtasia to record your computer screen such as our own tutorial videos on the 987mb Youtube Channel.

Be creative, be unique, do something different and you will be bound for Youtube Stardom, which will then propel the traffic to your website. You can use a free service called Tube Mogul to upload your video to several different video sharing websites at once.

Order cheap web hosting today and start marketing your very own website.

How To Choose The Right Domain

As you already know, its not so easy to find your ideal .com domain, as the chances are, its already been registered. You will need to activate your imagination in order to find something special. You can brainstorm ideas with your business partner, collegues, family or friends, in order to build a list of potential names for your online business.

Its always beneficial if you choose a domain name that includes one of your target keywords, as this will help you to create a more relevant website within your market and also helps you gain higher rankings within the search engines for your target keywords. Although this is not essential, it really does help.

The domain you register must be easy to remember, it should ideally be a .com or .co.uk, if possible dont use (-), as this may be harder for people to remember in the future. Something catchy but without keywords can also work very well.

All major email clients allow mailboxes to be accessed via either POP3 or IMAP4.These are two different protocols. On your desktop client, POP3 is downloaded directly from the mail server onto your computer.Your computer will store a “local copy” of the mail, and usually delete it from the server. You can create local folders on your computer to organise the mail, but you won’t see these or your mail if you logged in using webmail.

Additionally, if you create folders to organise your mail in webmail, you won’t be able to access these on your desktop client. Mail will therefore only contribute towards the mailbox limits while it is left undownloaded in the inbox.

IMAP4, in contrast, is left on the server (where it will continue contributing towards your mailbox limit). If you create folders/organise your mail in your desktop client, you will see this update when you log in with the webmail client (and vice-versa). Similarily, when you mark a message as “read” in webmail, it will appear “read” in your desktop client.

If you’re accessing your mail on several different computers, IMAP can therefore be useful.

To allow you to send mail through our mail server you now need to make a small change to the properties of the account. Select ‘Properties’ from the ‘Accounts’ window. You need to click the tick-box that says ‘My server requires authentication’ or ‘This server requires me to log on’ and then click ‘OK’ and ‘Close’

You can now send and receive emails using Outlook Express!

Within this tutorial, you will learn everything there is to know about the file manager found within your control panel. You can manage files & folders without using desktop software such as FTP. Although FTP is much more useful for uploading several files & folders at once, the file manager can be used for small changes or uploading single files. Heres a screenshot from inside the file manager at root level:

The screenshot above displays the root of the server for your specific domain. Columns include the File Name, File Size, File Type, The Date Of File Modification & The File Permissions. You can double-click on a folder to open that specific folder which will then display the folders and files within that folder. If you wish to rename, delete, move or change the permissions on a particular file or folder, you would right-click on the file or folder for further options.

At the top of the file manager, you are presented with several icons that perform certain tasks, i shall describe the uses of each from left to right, which are listed below:

This icon represents “Home”. If you have navigated deep into the file directory, clicking this icon will send you straight back to the home directory without having to navigate manually back through the folders.

These icons represent back and forward file manager navigation. This enables quick navigation from the previous & existing directories that you have opened. It works just like the back and forward buttons used on your web browser.

These icons represent “Select All” & “Unselect All”. If you wish to select or unselect all files & folders within a certain directory then these icons can be used to speed up the process. Its useful for changing the permissions on all directories or deleting all files/folders at once & saves you from selecting and changing each file & folder one at a time.

These icons represent “New File”, “New Folder” & “Upload File”. If you wish to create a new file or folder, then you would use the first and second icon. If you wish to upload a single file, you can do so using the third icon. You will be unable to upload a folder containing several files using the “Upload File” icon as its for singular files only. You can upload several singular files using this feature, although, if you wish to upload a directory containing several files & folders, then we recommend you use FTP.

123456789

1. Rename – Change the name of a file or directory.

2. Copy – Copy a file or folder.

3. Move – Move the selected file or folder to a new directory.

Within this tutorial, i will explain how to upload your website files using ftp. FTP is short for “File Transfer Protocol”, and is accessed easily via a software tool that allows you to upload any website files (images, videos & code) to the 987mb server, which will then allow you to access your files from the internet, such as loading your websites homepage from an internet browser.

First of all, you would need to download an FTP Client. I would recommend that you try File Zilla, as this is Free, and one of my personal favorites. Its easy to install, easy to configure and has a simple layout that will enable to manage your files, without any previous experience of using such software.

Once you have downloaded the FTP Client, you can then launch the software. Check your welcome email that you will have received after you signed up to the 987mb cheap web hosting service, as your FTP login details will be included. You can also access your FTP details by logging into the control panel and viewing the details listed within the right hand sidebar.

You will require 3 details to access the 987mb server:

The FTP Address OR IP Address. (also known as the FTP server or Host).

Your Username (usually your domain name).

Your Password.

You can either enter these within the site manager within the File Zilla options to save your login details for future use, or you can insert the details within the top access bar & clicking the quick connect button to instantly access FTP on your domain.

Please Note:

Before trying to access FTP, you must first unlock FTP within the right hand sidebar of the control panel. This is an extra feature we have added to increase security across our network. You can unlock for your own specific IP or by time.

If you have recently opened your account, you will only be able to access FTP using the IP address as the server, as you will have to allow time for your new domain to be registered or the nameservers on your existing domain name to resolve.

All website files must be uploaded within the “public_html” folder to ensure our server can read your files. Do not delete the public_html folder as this is always required.

Ensure your websites homepage is named “index.html or index.php”, otherwise your website will not load. It should also be in lowercase letters, without capitals at the beginning.

By reading through this guide, Uploading Website Files Using FTP will be very easy for you, even if you are new to FTP. If you are still having issues regarding this subject, please contact live support for assistance.
